Junaluska Gospel Choir
In the heart of Boone there is a church with a rich cultural history revolving around the idea that “ALL people are created in the image of God.” The Boone Mennonite Brethren Church has been a core part of Boone’s African American community since it was organized in 1911 and the building built in 1918. This church of humble beginnings is proud of its history. The historical leaders overcame struggles and racial barriers to promote unity and God’s love in Watauga. They were ahead of their time when it came to integration and stepped out in faith with the vision that a multi-racial church is something to be celebrated. “The church on the hill,” as it is called in the community, has been a beacon to people in the High Country for over 100 years. It stands today as a testament to overcoming and is aimed at being an important part of Boone’s future.
And at the heart of the Boone Mennonite Brethren Church is the Junaluska Gospel Choir. Aside from leading the praise and worship portion of the service every Sunday, the Choir often takes their uplifting message in song to various other churches and venues. Junaluska Gospel Choir has appeared on the stages of App State’s Schaefer Center, The Appalachian Theatre, Boonerang’s Main Stage, and at the Jones House, just to name a few. Driven by a four-piece band, the Choir presents a blend of Black Gospel styles spanning decades, as well as traditional hymns and spirituals, with an organic roots approach and their own energetic sound.
Wherever they are, the Junaluska Gospel Choir makes music for the glory of God and sincerely hopes their songs will lift your spirits. They invite you to join them at the Boone MB Church Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. In case you can’t find it, just follow the music up the hill!
Since we were unable to be together singing God’s praises in church from March 2020 through June 2021 due to the pandemic, it seemed the best solution for us was to create remote multi-track songs for our online Zoom Sunday services. Even though we couldn’t gather, we still wanted our music to be “ours.” Each instrument and voice track was recorded separately at various homes, then emailed to one location for compiling and mixing.
The songs in the playlist below are what we created to “make do” while being apart along with a few selections from a live concert at St. Elizabeth’s in 2014 for Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music. ENJOY!!
